Dithiolenes are one of the most fascinating family of ligands in coordination chemistry whose metal complexes find applications in catalysis, sensors, photosensitizers, biomaterials, and biomedicals, among others, owed to their redox and magnetic properties. These ligands are widely known as unsaturated bidentate ligands with two sulfur atoms that act like donors. Furthermore, they have also been studied to contain coordinating functionalities, giving it a bidentate property, whether it is by doing a metal-ligand reaction or a ligand-ligand reaction to increase its coordination sites. Synthesis of metal complexes such as nickel bis-dithiolenes ([Ni(dmit)2]<sup>2-</sup>) have been studied for biomedical application as Photothermal therapy agents (PTT) to treat cancer.In this this work, derivatives of dithiolene including acetylacetonate moieties were investigated for coordination of metal complexes with transition metals such as nickel, copper and zinc.We propose synthesizing metal complexes substituted with derivative of dithiolenes for a future biomedical application in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and PTT.Our novel syntheses will involve reactions of dithiolene systems with rare earth metals such as gadolinium (Gd<sup>3+</sup>) and transition metals such as manganese and iron. Characterization of metal complexes will be performed by IR EDS/SEM and UV-Vis techniques.
