Ruthenium complexes have been well studied for their catalytic ability towards water oxidation. The majority of these ruthenium complexes are supported by polydentate N-donor ligands (such as bipyrdine). Utilizing a functionalized pyridylphosphine oxide allows multiple donors to Bind to the ruthenium metal through N donor sites. Herein we present the synthesis and characterization of novel ruthenium complexes of 2-(6-(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine)diphenylphosphine oxide (OP(Py6Pz)Ph2) and bis-2-(6-(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine)phenylphosphine oxide (OP(Py6Pz)2Ph). The isolated products were structurally characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction. Following structural characterization, initial screening for electrocatalytic activity were conducted using cyclic voltammetry techniques.
