Schiff bases are a class of imines that are prepared by condensation of amines with aldehydes. Their complexes with transition metals are widely used in coordination chemistry as catalysts, serve as metalloprotein active sites, and some exhibit interesting magnetic properties. The goal of this study is to synthesize and characterize a heptadentate Schiff-base ligand (L) via the condensation of two equivalents of tridentate Schiff base (poxpam) with 2,6-pyridinedicarboxaldehyde N-oxide (loxal). Poxpam was prepared by the condensation of 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde with o-phenylenediamine. It is expected that the target ligand L could form multinuclear complexes with transition metal salts. Progress on the isolation and spectroscopic characterization of ligand L will be reported together with description of complexes formed either via complexation reactions of L with metallic salts or as results of template synthesis.
