Several substituted tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine oxide (OPPy3nMe) ruthenium complexes were prepared as potential water oxidation catalysts. The target ruthenium complexes – [Ru(κ3-OPPy3nMe)(NN)(Cl)][PF6] were obtained in multistep synthesis, where the addition of an N,N-chelate (NN) proceeds in near quantitative yield. The associated 2,2’-bipyridine, 4,4’-dimethylbipyridine, 4,4’-dimethoxybipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline complexes were successfully prepared, and the isolated products were dissolved in acetonitrile. Cyclic voltammetry and UV-visible spectroscopy techniques were then applied to assess potential as water oxidation catalysts.
