Terpyridine compounds are nitrogen containing molecules capable of attaching to metals in a tridentate manor similar to pincer compounds. Although the synthesis of terpyridine compounds has been known since the 1930s, they continue to be of use in inorganic chemistry. In particular, we are interested in their use as chemical sensors for the sensing of transition metals including cobalt, zinc, and lead. In this work, we will be describing our synthesis of several terpyridine complexes, their metal complexes, and our current work of making them water soluble in hopes of utilizing them as transition metal sensors in ground water samples.
