The development of photocatalytic systems for conversion of CO2 to energized molecules such as CO presents a fundamental opportunity to exploit an abundant source of raw materials in nature. Re(I)-carbonyl-diimine complexes [Re(CO)3(diamine)X]0,+1 are chemically robust and synthetically accessible photo- and redox-active complexes that have been extensively studied in the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CO. We are exploring the syntheses, structures and photophysical properties of complexes that incorporate novel visible light absorbing photosensitizer subunits of the naphthalimide class and variations in the identities and properties of the ligand X.
