The elaboration of molecular containers is fundamentally important because these cavities can mimic the active sites and reactivity of biological enzymes. An exemplar molecular capsule is the metallohemicryptophane, which combines a lipophilic cavity with a catalytic site, has recently gained attention due to the great control it can provide to form mononuclear species and the rigid confinement of its catalytic center. In this study, metallohemicryptophanes with different cavity accessibility were synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR, EPR and X-ray crystallography. Our studies suggest that these compounds exhibit remarkable features for molecular recognition and formation of reactive intermediates. In addition, electrochemical data reveal interesting redox behavior for the CuI/CuII system.
