Ionic liquids (ILs) are a family of non-conventional molten salts that offer many advantages, such as negligible vapor pressures, negligible flammability, wide liquidus ranges, good thermal stability, and much synthesis flexibility. The unique solvation environment of these ILs provides new reaction or flux media for controlling formation of solid-state materials with a minimum perturbation of morphologies. In addition, the ionic liquids can be readily recycled and reused after ionothermal lithiation. In this work, ionothermal relithiation of chemically delithiated NMC111 in three ILs, [C2mim][NTf2], [C4mim][NTf2], and [C2OHmim][NTf2] with different lithium precursors and different experimental conditions have been investigated. The recovered relithiated samples have been characterized with TGA, XRD, SEM, and ICP-OES. The electrochemical performance for these relithiated samples have also been evaluated in half-cell configuration giving excellent results. Based on our preliminary results, we believe that our ionothermal approaches towards restoring Li into chemically delithiated NMC111 for Li-ion battery recycling are promising and feasible.
