With the increased focus on climate change in recent years, a number of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies have been developed to reduce the anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Carbon mineralization is one of the most permanent methods of carbon storage and this reaction scheme has also been developed as one of the promising CO2 utilization technologies. By reacting Mg-bearing silicate minerals such as serpentine and olivine, CO2 can be fixed into thermodynamically stable solid carbonates. Carbon mineralization has also been applied to alkaline industrial wastes and byproduct streams such as dust from cement kilns, concrete wastes, mine tailings, and iron and steel slag. Often these industrial wastes are more reactive than silicate minerals but their quantities are limited, and thus, the carbonation of industrial wastes has been considered as one of the CO2 storage and utilization options with limited impacts. However, unlike silicate minerals, alkaline industrial wastes such as fly ash and iron and steel slag may contain significant amounts of other valuable elements including rare-earth elements (REEs) depending on the origins of their feedstocks. Thus, an innovatively integrated CO2 utilization scheme has been developed to selectively recover REEs from industrial wastes while sequestering CO2 into solid carbonates that can be used as high value filler materials and green construction materials. The physical separation and leaching of REEs from natural ores and industrial wastes are very different since their chemistries and mineralogies are distinct. Thus, this study has focused on the in-depth characterizations of slag containing Ca and REEs using a battery of tools including SEM-EDS and the leaching behaviors of Ca and REEs in the presence of CO2 are investigated to provide insights into this new materials distillation process that can provide multifaceted environmental benefits.
