As responsible consumers migrate towards more sustainable technologies, it becomes clear the use of lithium-ion based energy storage devices will grow in tandem. As such, the development of processing chemistry to recover valuable materials from lithium-ion battery cells must remain a priority. This is of primary concern for valuable metals and critical materials in the manufacturing supply chain. The process investigated in this work was associated with reclaiming materials used in the fabrication of lithium-ion battery cells. From a material composition perspective, a lithium-ion cell consists of aluminum and copper foil electrodes, anode material, cathode material, plastic film, electrolyte, adhesive and solvent. The project investigated a processing methodology for recovering the metal electrodes and cathode materials from a battery cell. The project focused on developing efficacy data on the process and establishing an operating window. The laboratory research lead to the development of a process to selectively release the cathodic coating from the metal electrode substrate. The selective release of cathodic material is essential and allows for easy separation of the aluminum and copper electrodes. Laboratory testing focused on a parametric investigation to better understand how each operating parameter influences process efficacy. A multi-tier, multi-level experimental design was developed for the test program. Parameters that were investigated include: operating temperature, reaction chamber pressure, gas flow rate, gas composition and residence time in the reactor.
