This study aims to determine the solubility product of uranyl arsenate solids using ion structural substitution for mineral synthesis, thermogravimetry, spectroscopy, calorimetry, and inductively coupled plasma spectrophotometry. The solubility of uranyl arsenate minerals needs to be further investigated to predict soluble uranium (U) and arsenic (As) concentrations in water streams near sites affected by natural and anthropogenic processes. Determining the solubility constants in controlled laboratory settings will help to understand the mineral nucleation, growth, and dissolution. Data from X-ray diffraction indicates the purity of abernathyite K[(UO2)(AsO4)(H2O)3, and natro-uranospinite Na[(UO2)(AsO4)(H2O)3. Thermogravimetric analyses indicated 11% water loss suggesting that the mineral was trihydrated. ICP analyses revealed equimolar concentrations of the synthesized solids. Current and future work includes TGA and ICP analyses of H(UO2)(AsO4)(H2O)4 and calorimetry analyses for determination of solubility product and enthalpy of formation. The findings from this investigation have implications for fate and mobility of uranyl arsenates.
