The distribution of ions and water molecules at the mineral-aqueous interface can influence outcomes such as particle growth, attachment, and aggregation. In this context, we characterize the boehmite-aqueous system by leveraging recent advances in atomic force microscopy–specifically 3D fast force mapping in amplitude modulated mode. We observe subnanometer lateral and vertical features that correspond to water distribution profiles within the interfacial solution. By comparing the experimental results to molecular dynamics simulations, we can ascribe these features to specific water density peaks and build a molecular-level picture of the interface. In addition to mapping the local solution structure, we characterize the nanoscale patterning of the colloidal interactions between the AFM tip and the underlying substrate that are directly correlated with the boehmite crystallography. These results provide insights into the role of hydration forces in particle attachment and aggregation.
