Chronic non-healing wounds affect millions of patients each year and contribute significantly to their morbidity and mortality. These wounds have a substantial impact because of their economic burden and the significant effect on the reduction in quality of life, as well as the increased risk of death for those patients affected by them. A common cause of delayed healing in chronic wounds is infection due to microbial contamination. Biofilm presence also contributes extensively to keeping the wound in a state of prolonged inflammation by the stimulation of nitric oxide, inflammatory cytokines, and free radicals. As a result, one of the best ways to begin wound healing is to treat it with a topical antimicrobial. Staphylococcus aureus, a gram-positive bacterium, is responsible for a range of skin illnesses. Escherichia coli, a gram-negative bacterium, plays a big role in the lower intestines, which can ultimately lead to sicknesses including food poisoning. Candida albicans, is the most prevalent cause of fungal infections in people. Within this project, Illipe and Tucuma Butters are used as the primary constituents of the base formulation. The butters are infused with a variety of organic essential oils as well as the addition of marine algae including, spirulina, chlorella, blue-green algae and marine phytoplankton and mushrooms including shiitake, maitake, reishi, cordyceps, lion’s mane, turkey tail, and chaga. All surfaces are tested for their antibacterial properties against, S. aureusand E. coli. We will report the preparation and physical characteristics of these novel formulations and the antimicrobial activity.
