Energetic stress is one of the leading causes of the global honey bee health decline. However, the relationship between honey bee hemolymph concentrations of trehalose, the biogenic amine octopamine, and the action of the G protein-coupled β-octopamine receptors, AmoctβR1-AmoctβR4, in the honey bee brain are not well understood within the context of honey bee appetite. To this end, we are developing a CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockdown of the aforementioned receptors in the honey bee brain, using gold nanoparticles and lipids as transfection agents.
