Both high transference number and strong mechanical property of polymer electrolyte could potentially suppress the lithium dendrites growth and improve the cycle life of lithium ion battery. Single-ion conducting polymer electrolyte shows the advantage of transference number close to unity, while the low conductivity at ambient temperature limits their practical applications. One of the strategies to improve conductivity is to incorporate with organic solvent, which always results in weaker mechanical performance. The trade-off relationship between these key parameters is the challenge to achieving high-performance single ion conducting polymer electrolyte. Here, we report a composite polymer membrane, which possesses both high single lithium ion conductivity and strong mechanical properties. A random co-polymer electrolyte of lithium (4-styrenesulfonyl) (trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (STF-Li+) with certain ratio of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA), has been synthesized via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The composite membrane was fabricated by chemically crosslinking the above polymer electrolyte with embedded glass mesh. The dry membrane shows conductivity 5*10-10 S/cm at 30oC and ~ 2GPa in storage modulus. Doped with different ratio of propylene carbonate (PC), the conductivity could be improved by almost six orders and is above 10-4 S/cm at 30oC, while at the same time the storage modulus stays at 0.1GPa level.
