It takes beyond completing the safety training and passing the quiz to infuse a safety culture throughout the undergraduate instructional laboratory courses.  A proactive safety culture requires coordinating and managing of multi-faceted elements, tasks, and players, which are oftentimes challenging and requiring long years of trial and error methodology because of the qualitative nature of outcomes and varying levels of lab safety perceptions of the stakeholders involved.  It can be overwhelming to the decision makers, instructors and safety employees that effective approaches are needed in streamlining resources and building teamwork towards a proactive safety culture.  <br/><br/>This presentation describes the challenges New Jersey City University, Chemistry Department (NJCU-CHEM) experienced in implementing its lab safety program in general chemistry laboratory courses. Establishing a safety culture has been an arduous and lengthy endeavor to a small department like NJCU-CHEM.  Lessons learned from the five-year safety program implementation led to the development of the Lab Safety Blueprint (LSB) that currently serves as a clear road map and compass to a proactive safety culture.   It highlights how the LSB approach resulted in the immersion of lab safety in the general chemistry laboratory course curriculum, and the improvement of student compliance with safety requirements and behavior in the lab, in general.<br/><br/>
