Throughout the history of science, names of exceptional individuals have become synonymous with laws, theories, and major discoveries and advancements. Iconic minds like Einstein, Curie, Edison, and Tesla are rightly celebrated, but they did not work alone, nor could they have been successful without the support of their colleagues, students, assistants, academic institutions, governments, etc. In short, science isn’t advanced in a vacuum; the broader scientific community is always critical to forward progress. As the speed of scientific and technological innovation has dramatically increased over the last century, our sense of what “community” means has evolved toward greater inclusiveness and globalization. In fields once dominated by white males, the value of diversity is more obvious than ever, but profound questions concerning inclusiveness and equity and strategies to promote these values remain largely unaddressed. In this talk, I will offer a “simple” suggestion for all young scientists (and not-so-young scientists, as well). Find your voice and use it! In order to be successful in any field, the sciences in particular, start by sharing your authentic self in the classroom and beyond. Strategies for feeling at home and finding your voice within the scientific community will be discussed.<br/>
