Many electrocatalysis processes involve multiple steps and intermediates. One single active site may work well for one or more steps (intermediates), but may not for all the reaction steps. Therefore, synergy between more than one single active sites is needed to promote the overall reaction. But how to identify and design the multiple-site catalysts to promote synergy between different active sites is still grand challenge. In this paper, we will discuss our recent discovery on active site synergy in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). For the former, we will focus on HER in neutral pH solutions, with a potential application for hydrogen production from waste water and seawater; and for the late, we will focus on atomically dispersed non-precious metal catalysts for ORR in acidic solutions, with the application background in proton exchange membrane fuel cells.
