Direct ethanol fuel cell technology depends critically on the ability of electrocatalysts to effectively cleaving the C-C bond, preventing C-O coupling and intermediate species poisoning. In this presentation, we will compare the performance of various transition metals, such as Ni, Cu, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Ir, Pt, and Au, towards complete ethanol oxidation based on the DFT calculations.  We will also summarize the effect of electrochemical environments on the C-C cleavage and C-O coupling.
