Noble metal-based nanomaterials are promising functional materials, which have potential applications in important fields, especially hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water electrolysis. However, low activity and unstability of current commercial Pt/C are still challenges for large-scale applications. Despite most of the researchers devoted their efforts mainly to the enhancement of catalytically performance in water dissociation, only a few desirable outcomes have been achieved. Today, constructing multicomponent Pt-based nanowires via interface engineering is an efficient strategy for improving the electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we fabricated a ultralong jagged PtMo-S nanowires (NWs) with rich “interfacial active sites” by using S as “active auxiliary” , as illustrated in Figure 1a-c, to demonstrate the enhanced catalytic HER performance triggered by the synergy of PtMo/MoSx interface. The PtMo-S nanowires exhibit an exceptional activity with 3.62 times specific current density and 4.03 times mass current density higher than those of commercial Pt/C, as well as an excellent stability towards alkaline HER activity (Figure 1d-f). The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that S element could obviously maintain the electron density of Pt via preventing the further oxidization of Mo. In addition, the theoretical calculations demonstrate that the water dissociation energy barrier can be significantly reduced under the interfacial synergy of intimate contact between Pt and MoSx. Thus, we think that this work illustrates a new strategy to advance fundamental exploration on electrocatalytic materials at an atomic/molecular level, which makes a systematic approach to build interfacial model catalyst available for fundamental electrocatalytic studies of alkaline HER.
