<br/>We discuss advances in the analysis of the kinetic oxygen reduction reactivity of PGM-free, metal- and nitrogen-doped carbons (MNC) electrocatalysts, in particular FeNC. Our recent work on PGM-free catalysis has been addressing the evaluation of the catalyst mass-based and catalyst surface area-based density of metal single sites, using probe gas molecule adsorption and thermal desorption. We discuss strengths, shortcomings and good practices related to the evaluation of active site density of PGM-free catalysts, and show how correlations of site density values with turn-over-frequency data can advance our understanding of PGM-free M-N-C ORR electrocatalysts and aid in a rational search for and synthesis of improved PGM-free fuel cell catalysts.<br/>
