We report on the generation of H2 gas from H2O vapor in a Berdut’s magnetic configuration. In this configuration, an arrangement of rotating permanent magnets induces a magnetic field on four independent aluminum tubes that are free to rotate as they become magnetized and serve as a catalytic surface. Power dissipation of the eddy currents and spin relaxation result in a temperature increase in the substrate. Hydrogen gas, an average of up to about 30 parts per million in a ten second interval, is detected in the temperature range of 340 to 375 K, with an onset temperature around 340 K. The amount of water in the environment decreases in this temperature range consistent with the formation of H2 from splitting H2O on the Al2O3/Al surface. The field generated by the rotating magnet is proposed to facilitate the formation of H2 from H2O by enhancing electron tunneling from the metal to the oxide layer surface while the induced rotation facilitates the migration of aluminum to the oxide surface where the water splitting reaction can take place.
