Renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, contribute a growing fraction of our global energy supply. Consequently, our fuel and chemical production industry must adapt to effectively utilize, convert, or store this vital resource through improved electrochemical processes. Oxidative catalysis enables production of a myriad of industrially relevant products. In order to take advantage of the growing supply and falling costs of renewable electricity, we consider possible electrochemical routes for oxidation reactions and how we may be able to tune product distributions.<br/>Electrochemical water oxidation is a ubiquitous example of oxidation catalysis as it is the complementary half-reaction to many fuel- or chemical-producing reductive reactions such as hydrogen evolution or carbon dioxide reduction. However, there is also significant interest in oxidation of organic species, either for purposes of environmental remediation or electroorganic synthesis. In these cases, we consider potential routes using direct electrooxidation or hydrogen peroxide mediated oxidation reactions. Electrochemical production of hydrogen peroxide has been suggested as a sustainable alternative to the current industrial Anthraquinone process, which is energy intensive and produces significant waste.  We present the effects of catalyst material and reaction environment on activity and selectivity of oxygen reduction to form hydrogen peroxide, as well as oxidation reactions.
