Catalytic conversion of alcohols over metal oxides to produce alkenes or aldehydes/ketones is of interest. In this study, ethanol conversion over a reduced La0.7Sr0.3MnO3-x(100) surface was investigated by temperature-programmed reaction following adsorption. Here, a reaction route towards acetaldehyde and ethene is found to be catalyzed by O-vacancies and the reaction selectivity evolves with the extent of surface reduction. Additional evidence for this mechanistic nuance was obtained using isotopically labelled ethanol. Based on these results, the operative pathways for ethanol reactions with La0.7Sr0.3MnO3-x(100) are proposed in terms of the density of O-vacancies. We believe that the density of the vacancies affects the selectivity, and our interpretation with kinetic simulation results will be presented.
