Efficient and selective multi-electron redox processes are central to many natural and industrial processes, including those relevant to energy storage. The two electron reduction of oxygen to peroxide is of interest, as peroxide is a useful oxidant produced on MTon-scale and has also received attention as a solar fuel for single-compartment fuel cells. Enabling coupled electron transfer events, using protons (PCET) or metal-ions (MCET) are critical to overcome challenges pertaining to selectivity and efficiency (over-potential & rates). MCET is a promising strategy to control single and multi-e- processes, and can enhance rates of ET by greater than 100,000,000 times upon addition of trivalent rare-earth metal Lewis-acids. In this talk, I will share our group's recent chemical and electrochemical investigations, where we have found that concerted MCET enables rapid and selective reduction of oxygen to peroxide - even in the absence of binding to a transition-metal ion. Key experimental and computational insights into the mechanism of MCET will also be discussed, along with strategies to maximize kinetic advantages without significant over-stabilization of reduced products.
