Schrödinger cat state spectroscopy is based upon using three tunable optical pulses to simultaneously excite three coupled vibrational and/or electronic states to form a coherent, multidimensional quantum mechanical superposition state that entangles the material states and the photon states that excite them. This state exists until a dephasing event or measurement forces the collapse of the superposition state and the emission of an output photon at the frequency difference between pairs of the entangled states. This fully coherent process is the optical analogue of NMR where vibrational and/or electronic states play the same role as nuclear spin states. Just as NMR has a family of different methodologies, so also do cat state methods form a similar coherent multidimensional family. This seminar will provide examples of the different methodologies and their applications to molecular spectroscopy, nanomaterials, and reaction mechanisms. It will demonstrate how coherent multidimensional spectroscopy can become a transformative technology that affects all fields of chemistry, science, and technology, particularly those involving the complex systems that will be needed for our global future.
