Novel x-ray and electron scattering techniques which are directly sensitive to the dynamical response of atoms provide powerful means for probing hot carrier - lattice coupling complementary to existing optical spectroscopic approaches. Here we present recent progress applying such techniques to the hybrid perovskites. Femtosecond above-gap optical excitation excites hot carriers with the subsequent dynamical response of the lattice visualized via direct scattering techniques sensitive both to unit cell rearrangements and local strain. In the hybrid perovskites, probing dynamics in single crystal MAPbBr<sub>3</sub> by femtosecond grazing incidence x-ray scattering approaches, we observe anomalous large amplitude strain responses with sensitivity to the q-dependent phonon excitations which accompany above gap photoexcitation. We will also report on recent parallel studies using femtosecond electron probes to visualize ultrafast structural rearrangements in nanocrystal hybrid perovskite variants.
