Many emergent inorganic and organic semiconducting materials, such as two-dimensional black phosphorus, covalent organic frameworks, and hybrid organic-inorganic heterostructures, are polycrystalline with grain sizes on the order of 10s of nm to 1 μm. Edge effects, grain boundaries, and rotational domains contribute to large morphological variations, resulting in spatially variant potential energy surfaces (PESs) for excited charge carriers. These modified PESs can be substantially different from those of the intrinsic materials, meaning that morphology significantly impacts excited state dynamics and charge- and energy-transport properties. I will describe new efforts in my laboratory to investigate spatially heterogenous semiconductors and molecular films using time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy. Our initial investigations focus on the impact of layer thickness and crystalline domain orientation heterogeneity on the anisotropic exciton dynamics of two-dimensional black phosphorus. Overall, we seek to identify how the anisotropic properties of black phosphorus could be used to tune and steer energy in materials on the nanoscale even in the presence of material heterogeneity.
