Ionic liquid + silver salt mixtures are incorporated in specially synthesized inorganic supports which yield exceptionally thin (&lt;1 μm) supported IL membranes (SILMs).  These membranes demonstrate extremely high flux, in addition to the high selectivities one has come to expect with facilitated transport.  Moreover, we show that some choices of anion and ionic liquid protect the silver cation from being reduced by hydrogen to silver metal, which is a normal method of deactivation of silver salts.
