Selective and efficient separations are essential for a wide variety of applied fields, including desalination and water purification, to the recovery of high-value chemicals in the pharmaceutical and bioprocessing industries. In this talk, I will provide a general outline of our recent efforts in separations as it pertains to synthetic functionalization routines based on atomic layer deposition (ALD) and sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS), and their ability to control with near-atomic based precision appropriate surface chemistries for crude oil sorbents (e.g. OleoSponge), non-fouling coatings for membranes, and tunable sorbents for bio-separations. Particular attention will be paid to the delicate interplay between the introduction of functional surface chemistry groups, and a material’s underlying form factor (e.g. pore size, porosity, surface area). By utilizing salient features of the ALD and SIS functionalization routines, I will describe how it is possible to produce equivalent surface chemistries on a wide variety of form factors, and thus target specific applications, e.g. soft compressible foams for reusable sorbents, high-throughput xerogels for high-flow applications, and selective adsorption in complex bioprocessing streams.
