This presentation will describe curricular changes that aim at integrating a research-based approach to the General Chemistry Laboratory while serving the local community with useful data.  Lab activities, rather than being a series of isolated experiments that reproduce proven results, are centered on a research question typically connected to a local issue of environmental relevance.  Students work with a local partnering organization to compile a database of water quality parameters to assess the impact of municipal wastewater discharge in a marsh that is also a wildlife refuge.  Activities include a field trip to conduct onsite analyses and sampling of water to bring back to the lab for further analyses.  This approach not only increases students’ engagement in the laboratory but furthers their understanding of regulatory policies and how science can inform and shape those policies.<br/>
