Our group has investigated students’ mathematical reasoning in the context of chemical kinetics across multiple projects.  We discovered that students who are able to recognize patterns in mathematical equations and graphs more effectively blend their mathematical and chemical understanding to describe phenomena.  Related to this ability to blend is how students are taught mathematics. Thus, it may be insightful for chemistry faculty to learn how covariation of variables, graphing, and concepts from calculus are approached in mathematics courses. It may help physical chemists understand student difficulties in using their mathematical knowledge in physical chemistry courses. <br/>
