In the search for alternatives to fossil fuels, solar fuels have gained significant attention due to their sustainability and capacity for delocalized production. Photocatalytic generation of hydrogen from water presents the opportunity to have a clean and portable solar fuel which is also providing feedstock for important industrial processes such as Haber-Bosch. We have studied the generation of hydrogen from water as a potential solar fuel via a novel mass parallel screening platform using chemosensory colorimetric detection as depicted in figure. This process has made possible the exploration of a co-catalytic water reduction system through variation of over 1,900 iridium-based photo-catalysts (depicted in the bar graph in figure) and over 3,000 bimetallic nanoparticulate water reduction co-catalysts. Data from these screenings allows for insights into the structure-activity relationship present in the photosensitizers, and establishment of correlations between bulk metal properties and functionality within the nanoparticulate catalysts. This experimental work has been compared with DFT calculations of adsorption energies to demonstrate the validity of the Sabatier principle in this solution based photocatalytic system. Several outstanding candidates for both screened systems have been determined and further work is in process on characterizing the nanoparticles formed in-situ.
