Novel molecular transformations are of fundamental interest in synthetic chemistry and molecular design. In particular, selective cycloaddition reactions can generate sophisticated cyclic motifs from simple precursors. A novel metal-mediated bicyclization of 2-amino-4,6-diazido-1,3,5-triazine will be presented. Reactions utilizing 2-amino-4,6-diazido-1,3,5-triazine and metal bis(trimethylsilyl)amides were performed and the resulting products were analyzed with x-ray crystallography and UV-vis spectroscopy. Strong bases such as lithium tert-butylamide were substituted in place of a metal complex and the resulting products were analyzed in the same manner. A crystal structure of a bicyclic, heterocyclic ligand and a UV-vis spectrum corresponding with a transition metal ion coordinated to a conjugated bicyclic nitrogen ligand demonstrate the successful bicyclization of 2-amino-4,6-diazido-1,3,5-triazine. The ability of both a strong base and a metal bis(trimethylsilyl)amide to successfully bizyclize 2-amino-4,6-diazido-1,3,5-triazine signifies similar functions regarding the bicyclization of 2-amino-4,6-diazido-1,3,5-triazine. The discovery of this molecular transformation provides valuable insight into the role of transition metal complexes in molecular rearrangements.
