A variety of functionalized pyridyltriazole ligands are readily available via click type cycloaddition of alkynes and triazoles. Complexation of the tetradentate m-xylenebis(pyridyltrizole) (xpt) ligand with Cu(II) gives a dimeric macrocyle with square pyramidal geometry at Cu and Cu...Cu 6.8 Å. Reduction of the dimer by using ascorbate as reducing agent rearranges the Cu centers to a pseudotetrahedral geometry with an elongated Cu...Cu separation ( ca. 9 Å). Oxidation of the Cu(I) solution in air (or pure O2) results in the capture of oxalate, which is formed by oxidation of ascorbate, as a guest in the cavity of the Cu24+ dimer. In the absence of ascorbate and/or its oxidation products, however, the Cu(I) solution oxidation results in transformation of CO2 to carbonate and formation of a Cu3(m3-CO3)4+ trimer (see figure 1). In another study, isomers of ruthenium complexes with benzylpyridyltriazole and terpyridine supporting ligands are isolated and characterized by common spectroscopic methods and X-ray crystallography. Reactivity of these complexes in water oxidation catalysis to produce dioxygen is being tested, and a comparison with its well known bipyridine analogue will be presented.
