Recent developments in oil and gas extraction techniques have increased oil and gas production rates in certain basins. As production increases, so too can the quantity of produced water generated increase. Currently, produced water is managed primarily through reuse in the oil field or disposal in injection disposal wells. Management of produced water through treatment and discharge to surface waters is limited due to national effluent guidelines regulations. Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has been evaluating the current regulatory landscape for produced water management under the Clean Water Act to determine if changes to the national effluent guidelines regulations to allow broader treatment and discharge of produced water would be supported, and if so what are the challenges that such changes could create. This presentation will provide an update on the USEPA's recent activities on this topic, highlighting some of the analytical, technical and data needs identified.
