The systems thinking enables a better understanding of the current systems and directs the interventions.  More and less sustainable packaging has been achieved with material switching.  However, the use of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and the economics on these comparative materials demonstrates that a systems solution perspective is needed to add a business case to use material switching more effectively and actually result in more sustainable packaging processes.<br/>Systems solutions improve the effectiveness of the material switching solutions by analyzing the bigger picture elements such as patterns, interactions, feedback loops, and causal relationships, etc. Systems solutions to define more sustainable packaging from feedstock selection, manufacturing, processing, food-package interactions, consumer use, and post-consumer utilization-focused recommendations will be shared to direct research, legislation, and industry.  Case studies on success in packaging systems including innovative materials will be shared.
