Environmental chemistry is an important and fascinating growing area of interdisciplinary chemical research and education. Throughout my career I have been interested in understanding the chemical evolution of key environmental pollutants, and how this evolution in turn changes the impacts of pollution on the environment, ecosystems, and life. I will outline my educational and career path that has allowed me to gain research and educational experiences in physical and analytical chemistry, atmospheric science, and environmental science. My research has involved early work on the environmental fate of highly persistent perfluorinated pollutants, and then laboratory experiments on the heterogeneous kinetics of gas-particle reactions. During my PhD and Postdoctoral research in atmospheric chemistry I performed field research including cloud research flights to understand the chemical evolution of individual atmospheric particles, and how this alters their ability to create liquid cloud drops and ice crystals. These are key uncertainties in our understanding of how human activities are changing clouds and climate. I will present ongoing research in my lab at Carnegie Mellon that combines the development of new analytical techniques including aerosol optical tweezers and microfluidics for aerosol particle analysis to investigate complex realistic chemical systems relevant to the atmosphere. Two research topics I will focus on are the chemistry of biomass-burning smoke aerosol, and the sources and chemical evolution of the ice nucleating particles emitted in the smoke. I will conclude with a return to my start in environmental chemistry by discussing recent research exploring the use of aerosol droplet chemistry as a new efficient way to remove persistent micropollutants from water through chemical catalysis.<br/>
