Atmospheric nitrogen is largely fixed for biological processes by synthesis of ammonia, which is then oxidized sequentially for use in diverse biochemical reactions. The formation of N-H bonds and their subsequent breaking is essential for the chemistry of life. We are interested in electrochemical routes through which N-H bonds can be reductively synthesized and then oxidatively broken. Specifically, our group is developing continuous, lithium-mediated routes for ammonia synthesis under ambient conditions. In our work, we have found in-depth mechanistic understanding of the reaction networks which contribute to ammonia synthesis from nitrogen and hydrogen donors.  We have used this understanding to uncover reaction conditions which lead to higher efficiencies and rates of ammonia synthesis. In addition to understanding the molecular-level details of N-H bond formation, we have also elucidated details of how the N-H bond can be electrochemically dissociated, using kinetic studies and density functional theory. These studies together provide a detailed picture of how N-H bond chemistry can be manipulated in the context of energy storage and electrosynthesis.<br/>
