Developing high-efficient energy storage devices constitutes the core issue to meet the growing energy demand of the modern society. Metal–air batteries and lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are highly considered as next-generation energy storage techniques because of their high energy density. However, their practical performances are greatly limited by the oxygen or sulfur electrochemical processes with sluggish kinetics. Therefore, investigation on the oxygen and sulfur electrocatalysis and rational design of corresponding electrocatalysts are highly considered for the construction of high-performance energy storage devices. Herein, framework porphyrin (POF) materials were designed as the electrocatalysts for the oxygen and sulfur redox reactions. POF was one-pot synthesized under precise control at the atomic level with high yield and output. Hybrids of POF and nanocarbon demonstrate superior performances in oxygen and sulfur electrocatalysis including oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, and polysulfide redox reactions. Full-scheme electrocatalytic regulation was realized regarding lithium polysulfide conversion, Li2S nucleation, and Li2S dissolution. Consequently, high initial capacity, stable cycling, and high-sulfur-loading Li–S batteries were realized. Cobalt coordinated POFs and their hybrids, on the other hand, serve as excellent bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. Further composition significantly promotes the bifunctional performances superior than the noble-metal-based Pt/C+Ir/C electrocatalyst. Moreover, conventional liquid and flexible all-solid-state Zn–air batteries were constructed with POF cathodes to afford small voltage gap and outstanding cycling stability. The POF materials with impressive diversity in composition and morphology develop our chemical understanding of electrocatalysis in energy related applications and inspires other systems based on multi-electron redox reactions.
