Simultaneous conduction of ions and electrons is a critical step in the use of materials for energy storage and conversion. Movement of both ions and electrons is necessary to allow reactions to occur at the electrodes of batteries, fuel cells, and other electrochemical devices. Electron and hole motion through polymeric semiconductors is reliant on a high degree of order between neighboring chains while ion conduction relies on segmental motion of the polymer. Further, I will discuss how when doping polymeric semiconductors, the location of the counterion plays a critical role in the electronic behavior of the material. For these reasons, the design of materials across atomic through meso and macroscopic lengthscales is critical to balance intrachain transport of charges with ionic mobility.
