The volume expansion coefficient is a thermodynamic susceptibility that yields important information on molecular cohesion and organization of condensed matter. The monitoring of this parameter might provide detailed knowledge on structural changes caused by phase transitions, glass transitions, and volume changes (i.e., shrinkage). Despite its evident importance, this parameter is often disregarded in polymer science due to the technical limitations, particularly during curing, when the components are generally in the liquid state. The novel technique called “Temperature Modulated Optical Refractometry” (TMOR), however, can monitor the evolution of the volume expansion coefficient with time or temperature. Additionally, TMOR can differentiate the static and dynamic contributions to the volume expansion coefficient due to the imposition of a temperature modulation. The main achievements employing TMOR technique in polymer science are here summarized. The results confirm the ability of TMOR to provide a new insight into polymer curing and characterization, and highlights the scientific value of this technique for condensed matter research is demonstrated.
