The last decade has seen tremendous interest in the design and synthesis of inter- and intramolecular Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLPs) as metal-free catalysts for organic transformations [1]. In this context, our laboratory recently demonstrated that sterically congested organosuperbases can be combined with moderate to weak Lewis acids to generate so-called “inverse” FLPs [2]. Herein, we will show that these conceptually new FLP systems are not only capable of cleaving molecular hydrogen, more importantly, they catalyze the hydrogenation of various imines and ketones [3]. We have also synthesized “inverse” <i>intramolecular</i> Frustrated Lewis Pairs that contain strongly basic guanidine units covalently linked to moderately to weakly Lewis acidic organoboron moieties. Applications of these newly designed FLPs towards small molecule activation will be discussed.<br/><br/>
