Catalytic conversion of CO2 to value-added chemicals and fuels has been long regarded as a promising approach to mitigate CO2 emissions. Light olefins, particularly ethylene and propylene, as building blocks for polymer and plastics are currently produced primarily from CO2-generating fossil resources. Identifying highly efficient catalysts with selective pathways for light olefin production from CO2 is a high-reward goal in research but meets with serious technical challenges. The primary objective of this work is to develop a unique core-shell catalyst with improved activity, selectivity and stability for CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins. Preliminary results indicate that the CNS encapsulated iron/cobalt nanoparticles are promising catalysts for direct CO2 conversion to light olefins with promising catalytic activity under mild testing conditions (ambient pressure, T = 300°C, and H2/CO2 ratio = 3). Strategies to further improve the catalyst performance by understanding the confinement effect and reaction mechanism are put forth in this work. Pulse CO Chemisorption, Temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) were carried out with an aim to establish relationships between activity and properties. This unique core-shell nanoreactor formed by encapsulating the active Fe species in CNS can provide an ideal and practical model system to explore the fundamentals of confined catalysis.
