Significant efforts have been concentrated on the synthetic method development of tetrahydroquinoline (py-THQ) due to its pharmaceutical and agrochemical significance. A commonly used method to prepare py-THQ involves semi-reduction of quinoline. However, harsh reaction conditions have been employed such as high H2 pressure and high temperature for the hydrogenation of quinoline. Thus, further improvement of the methods is desired to secure ready access to py-THQ. From our continuing work in the heterogeneous catalysis, we envisioned that hydrogenation of py-THQ can be achieved through the use of a bimetallic catalyst with NH3BH3 as a hydrogen source. NH3BH3 has attracted extensive attention due to its ability to release hydrogen in the presence of appropriate noble metal catalysts and solvent at room temperature. Since it can only produce hydrogen under specific conditions, the rate of hydrogen production can easily be controlled. We developed a catalytic hydrogenation of quinoline utilizing bimetallic alloy PdRh-Fe3O4 catalyst and NH3BH3 as a hydrogen source at room temperature. Hydrogenation of quinoline was successfully accomplished with &gt;99% yield with the use of recyclable PdRh-Fe3O4 (2 mol%). Various substituted quinolines were examined under the hydrogenation condition.
