Due to the increase in the amounts of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere, it has been important to study the process of being able to utilize carbon dioxide. The primary goal of this study is to convert CO2 to value-added chemicals, such as light olefins, carbon monoxide, methanol, and fuel. Herein, we report carbon nanosphere (CNS) encapsulated cobalt catalyst that enables the conversion of CO2 to light olefins. The CNS encapsulated cobalt catalyst was tested for CO2 hydrogenation through a flow bed reactor at different temperatures using on-line gas chromatography (GC) analysis. The testing results showed promising selectivity and conversion for CO2 conversion to light olefins. Pulse CO Chemisorption, Temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) were carried out with an aim to establish relationships between activity and properties. This unique core-shell nanoreactor formed by encapsulating the active cobalt species in CNS can provide more insights into understanding the role of Co and CNS in the reaction pathway for CO2 with H2 to light olefins.
