Nanoparticles (NPs) are materials between 1 and 100 nm in size, often with novel size-dependent properties. Their novel behaviors have allowed them to be used in a wide range of industrial processes and consumer products; nanotechnology underpins many sectors in modern society. Their wide use has led to their discharge to the environment and applications in remediation lead to their intentional release. Once in the environment and exposed to complex media, NPs are prone to changes in their properties through a range of biophysico-chemical processes such as microbial degradation, dissolution, agglomeration and corona formation. Understanding fate, behavior and effects of incidentally released NPs requires a detailed understanding of their transformations, while safe and effective use for remediation in the environment, requires understanding of their persistence and transformations. Using examples from both areas (NPs as a pollutant and NPs as a technological solution to pollution), the role of transformations will be discussed. Specifically silver nanoparticle transformations measured by single particle and single cell ICP-MS and polymer coated magnetite NPs for oil remediation will be discussed.<br/>
