Biochar, the byproduct from fast pyrolysis of waste biomass, is widely used as a soil conditioner to not only improve soil quality and crop yield but potentially decrease emissions of greenhouse gases from soil. The phosphorus in biochar is not only a P source for plant growth, but also an important factor caused the eutrophication of water. Poultry farming produces a large amount of poultry litter, which has caused waste management challenges in Taiwan. For PL, conversion to biochar may also slow down nutrient release and thus minimize the environmental impacts of the poultry industry, but the factors regulating the releases of phosphorus from poultry litter biochar (PLB) have not be well understood. So far the effect of biochar amendment on soil P availability was not well understood. In this study, the effects of PLB on the growth of rice were investigated. Poultry litter and PLBs obtained at different pyrolysis temperature were applied as either P fertilizer or soil amendment (0.5 and 1.0%). The results showed that the growth of rice were significantly increased by the biochar treatment and the positive effect of the low-temperature PLB was better that the high-temperature counterpart. At higher P additions, the biochar application rate of 1% promoted the releases of more than did those of 0 and 0.5 %; and more amounts of availability P extracted from soil with biochar application rate of 1% were found also. Compared with C600 amendment, C350 amendment enhanced more P extracted from soil. The amendment of PLBs resulted in the increase of soil pH, biochar applied in acid soil that increase available phosphorus which was biochar romised to increase soil pH, to enhance fertilizer-use efficiency, and to improve nutrient-retention capacity. Thus, PLBs can be used as a source of P for growing rice while the availabilities of P were increased due to the pyrolysis treatment. A potential strategy to effectively deal with poultry litter is to produce poultry-litter biochar (PLB), which may provide environmental and economic benefits including the increase of crop productivity, and the reduced need for additional fertilizer usage.
