Derived from naturally-occurring materials, nano-sized particles are the new wave of technologies most commonly used in industrial applications to improve the efficiency of energy, drug delivery, and bio-imaging. One such nano-sized particles are Quantum dots (QDs) usually composed of a heavy metal core and an organic shell. Graphene oxide Quantum Dots (GOQDs), one generation of QDs, manufactured by oxidizing a single to tens of layers of graphene of a size less than 30 nm can be modified to yield different chemistries. This study looks at the sorption of both untreated GOQDs and ozone-treated GOQDs on aged ferrihydrite (AFh) and unaged ferrihydrite (FFh). With the experiment conducted in a pH range of 4-5, the AFh removed 26.58%±1.60 of the untreated GOQDs compared to 15.43%±1.83 that was removed by FFh. In the same pH range, the AFh removed 11.25%±0.74 of ozone-treated GOQDs while the FFh removed 13.76±1.54 of the ozone-treated GOQDs. The reaction observed between GOQDs and ferrihydrite is consistent with the bonding between the negatively charged sides of GOQDs to the positively charged sides on ferrihydrites that occurs at a pH range of 7.2-8 (point of zero charge). This presentation will cover the changes in sorption of GOQDs on ferrihydrite, hematite, and goethite over natural pH (range of 4-10).
