Cancer is the second cause of mortality worldwide according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO). In Mexico, malignant tumors represented the third cause of mortality during 2015. The most common treatments are surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The latter consists of the use of cytotoxic compounds, which can be organic or inorganic. Platinum is the only metal used and approved as a coordination compound for use as a chemotherapeutic (Cisplatin and Carboplatin). However, both these compounds and any chemotherapeutic drug, have serious side effects as they attack cells that proliferate rapidly and not specifically cancer cells. With the aim of developing chemotherapy with fewer adverse side effects, for almost four decades Dr Lena Ruiz group has developed copper coordination compounds, called Casiopeinas®, which present similar or superior activities to those of the Cisplatin; which is why this series of compounds will shortly begin phase I clinical studies. This new family of copper coordination compounds for use as chemotherapy has significant side effects, as well as low bioavailability. In the last couple of decades, controlled release and / or modified drug delivery systems have been investigated extensively, with nanocarrier systems being some of the most promising; already presenting approved drugs for clinical use. Therefore, Dr. Lena Ruiz group has begun to work with the nanoencapsulation of Casiopeinas®, with the aim of developing viable nanoparticle formulations for future clinical therapies. In this work, the development of stable nanoparticles based on vectorized wrinkled mesoporous silica (WMS-NP), its characterization, evaluation of it's in vitro activity, as well as studies of in vitro and in vivo release.
